Job Title: Teacher Learning Support, Pathway Programs

Job Purpose: Contributes to student learning and development by providing effective and meaningful academic and language skills support programs to develop students' skills in achieving success in the university, their careers and beyond

Key Result Areas: 

1. Providing Advice on Learning

  • Manage the language learning programs at the Learning Centre that target the development of students' language and learning skills
  • Provide a range of activities specifically designed to improve students’ academic outcomes including teaching, tutoring and coaching
  • Reach out to students who have been identified by academic staff as having difficulty meeting academic standards to provide additional guidance, individually or as a group
  • Consistently review and upgrade the language learning programs and activities offered by Learning Centre
  • Communicate to students and staff about the availability of language learning programs at the Learning Centre using established campus networks (e.g., email, LED posters, Learning Centre webpage) and follow up on at-risk students who do not respond

2. Collaboration with Academic and Non-Academic Staff 

  • Collaborate with Pathway Program teachers and administrators to coordinate between the formal teaching programs and the programs provided by the Learning Advisor
  • Work with individual teachers to conduct learning activities that target specific learning needs of students (e.g., academic writing sessions for ELPP and Foundation students)
  • Collaborate with Student Services on activities and programs that develop language and learning skills of students (e.g., Orientation week and leadership training)
  • Collaborate with administrative and operational staff (e.g., Marketing, Registrar and Human Resources) to provide better services tailored to the needs of potential and enrolled students at the University (e.g., marketing the services of the Learning Centre to prospective students and to work with agents during an agent conference)

3. Planning and Reporting 

  • Meet regularly with the Campus Dean to discuss Learning Centre activities and programs with specific focus on continuous improvement of services for holistic student development
  • Develop strategic approaches to improve student academic outcomes across the campus
  • Provide annual report to Campus Dean with recommendations for future action

4. Corporate Expectations 

  • Ensure all activities are aligned with current JCU policies, procedures and practices and in accordance with University Triennium Plan 
  • Provide remedial teaching into Pathway Programs as and when necessary
  • General support for marketing initiatives and activities
  • Other duties as directed by the Campus Dean

Educational Qualifications: 

Master’s degree or PhD in Education, English language teaching, TESOL, CELTA, Communication, related discipline or equivalent level of professional experience

Relevant Experience: 

At least 3 years' teaching experience involving academic and learning skills, academic writing and English language preferably in school and tertiary settings
